The rankings, which were updated on June 7, 2026, evaluate 67 universities across Ghana using data collected through the AD Scientific Index SMART Institutional Excellence framework. 1. University of Ghana, Legon Remains the Nation’s Best University
The University of Ghana has once again secured its position as the highest-ranked university in Ghana.
Founded in 1948, the university is ranked first in Ghana, 11th in Africa and 800th in the world. It remains the country’s largest and oldest university and continues to play a leading role in research, higher education and national development.
According to the AD Scientific Index, the University of Ghana has 1,235 staff scientists recorded in the database. Among them, 52 researchers are ranked within the global top 10 percentile, while 236 fall within the top 30 percentile and 486 are listed within the top 50 percentile.

The institution has 92 staff scientists included in the AD Scientific Index database, with two researchers appearing in the global top 10 percentile and 11 in the top 30 percentile.

7. GCTU Continues to Support Ghana’s Digital Future
Ghana Communication Technology University has secured the seventh position nationally.
Founded in 2005 and located in Accra, GCTU ranks 212th in Africa and 4,286th worldwide.
The university has 117 staff scientists listed in the rankings, with two researchers in the global top 10 percentile and four within the top 30 percentile.
As Ghana’s leading public university dedicated to information and communication technology, GCTU continues to play an important role in developing professionals in software engineering, cybersecurity, telecommunications, artificial intelligence and data science.
8. UEW Remains Ghana’s Leading Teacher Education Institution
The University of Education, Winneba ranks eighth among Ghana’s universities.
Established in 1992, UEW is ranked 227th in Africa and 4,519th globally.
According to the AD Scientific Index, the university has 306 staff scientists.
UEW remains the country’s premier institution for teacher education and continues to supply trained professional teachers who support Ghana’s basic, secondary and tertiary education sectors.
9. UENR Continues Its Rapid Growth
The University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani occupies the ninth position nationally.
Founded in 2011, the university ranks 231st in Africa and 4,563rd globally.
The institution has 213 staff scientists included in the rankings. Among them, one researcher appears in the global top 10 percentile, while 16 are within the top 30 percentile and 68 are in the top 50 percentile.
Although still relatively young, UENR has established itself as an important centre for research in renewable energy, environmental sustainability, natural resources management and engineering.

10. CK Tedam University Completes Ghana’s Top Ten
CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences has completed the list of Ghana’s ten highest-ranked universities.
Despite its young age, it ranks 10th in Ghana, 235th in Africa and 4,606th globally.
The university has 111 staff scientists listed by the AD Scientific Index. One researcher falls within the global top 10 percentile, while 10 are in the top 30 percentile and 34 are within the top 50 percentile.
