Keep Carlos Queiroz and we’ll win AFCON or the World Cup – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s football leaders to do everything possible to convince Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz to remain in charge of the national team on a permanent basis. According to the President, keeping the experienced Portuguese coach is one of the most important steps Ghana can take if the country wants to win major international football trophies in the coming years. He believes that changing coaches too often can slow down the team’s progress and make it difficult to build a strong and successful squad.
The President shared his views on Friday while inspecting the Ho Sports Stadium. During his visit, he spoke about the future of the Black Stars and stressed that the team needs consistency if it wants to compete with the best football nations in the world. He explained that maintaining the current coaching setup would allow the players to continue improving under the same football philosophy and tactical system.

Mahama Calls for Continuity
President Mahama said building a successful national team takes time, patience, and commitment. He believes Carlos Queiroz has already started putting together a strong foundation that should not be interrupted. Instead of starting over with a new coach, Mahama feels Ghana should continue the journey that has already begun under the Portuguese manager.
According to the President, keeping the same coach allows players to understand the team’s tactics better, improve their confidence, and develop stronger teamwork. Frequent changes on the coaching bench often force players to adapt to new ideas and different playing styles, which can affect performances. Mahama believes that allowing Queiroz to continue his work will give Ghana a much better chance of achieving success at future international tournaments.
President Confident About Future Success
The President expressed strong confidence that Ghana can become one of Africa’s leading football nations again if the current project is allowed to continue. He believes the Black Stars have enough talented players to challenge for major honours, provided they remain under stable leadership.
“I’m sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions,” Mahama stated.
His statement reflects his belief that the team is moving in the right direction and only needs more time to grow together. Rather than making major changes after every tournament, the President believes patience could eventually reward Ghana with success on the biggest stages in world football.
Debate Continues Over Queiroz’s Future
The President’s public support for Carlos Queiroz comes at a time when many football fans and analysts continue to discuss the coach’s future with the Black Stars. Since taking charge of the team, opinions have been divided. Some supporters believe his experience and tactical knowledge make him the right person to lead Ghana forward, while others feel different results should have been achieved.
Mahama’s comments have now added another important voice to the ongoing discussion. As President, his endorsement is likely to attract even more attention as football authorities consider the next steps for the national team.
Black Stars Exceeded Expectations at the World Cup
Before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, many football fans did not expect Ghana to make a deep run in the tournament. The Black Stars entered the competition with modest expectations after facing strong opposition in their group. However, under Carlos Queiroz, the team managed to surprise many observers with disciplined performances and determined displays.
Ghana began their World Cup campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Panama. The narrow win gave the team an important three points and boosted confidence ahead of their second group match. They then played out a goalless draw against England, a result that extended Ghana’s impressive record in second group matches at the FIFA World Cup.
Those performances helped the Black Stars secure qualification to the newly introduced Round of 32, marking an important achievement for a team that many people had underestimated before the tournament began.
Ghana’s Journey Came to an End
After booking their place in the knockout stage, the Black Stars suffered a narrow defeat against Croatia in their final group match. Although the loss was disappointing, Ghana had already done enough to progress to the next round of the competition.
Their World Cup journey eventually ended in the Round of 32 after a closely contested match against Colombia. Despite the elimination, many football followers praised the team’s fighting spirit and the improvements shown throughout the tournament. Several young players also gained valuable experience that could benefit the national team in future competitions.
Eyes Now Turn to the Future
With the World Cup campaign now over, attention has shifted to preparations for the next Africa Cup of Nations and the next FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. One of the biggest questions facing Ghana football is whether Carlos Queiroz will remain as head coach or whether the Ghana Football Association will decide to appoint someone else.
President Mahama has made his position very clear. He believes the Black Stars have already started building something special under Queiroz and that changing direction now could slow the team’s progress. Whether football authorities follow his advice remains to be seen, but many Ghanaians will be watching closely as a decision is made about the future of the national team’s leadership.
