The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school year, providing schools, teachers, parents and pupils with a clear roadmap for the upcoming academic session.
The calendar applies to all basic schools across Ghana, including Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools, and outlines the opening and closing dates for each term, vacation periods, mid-term breaks and the dates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The announcement gives education stakeholders enough time to prepare for the new school year and organise academic activities accordingly.
With the official calendar now available, schools can begin planning lessons, examinations, extracurricular activities and other important events that will take place throughout the academic year.
The calendar was contained in an official circular signed by the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Smile Dzisi, on behalf of the Director-General.
The document was addressed to all Regional Directors of Education with instructions for it to be forwarded to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education, who will then distribute it to heads of basic schools across the country.
The release of the calendar is an important step in ensuring that schools across Ghana operate under the same timetable and maintain consistency throughout the academic year.
Academic Year Will Be Divided Into Three School Terms
According to the Ghana Education Service, the 2026/2027 academic year will continue to follow the three-term system used in Ghana’s basic education sector.
Each term has been carefully scheduled to provide enough teaching and learning time while also allowing pupils and teachers to enjoy vacation periods before the next term begins. The arrangement is intended to promote effective teaching, improve learning outcomes and ensure that schools complete the approved curriculum within the academic year.
The three-term structure also provides opportunities for schools to conduct assessments, organise extracurricular programmes and prepare pupils adequately for national examinations.
First Term Begins in September 2026
The first term of the new academic year will officially begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, when schools reopen across the country.
According to the calendar, the first term will run for 15 weeks before ending on Thursday, December 17, 2026. During this period, pupils will return to classrooms after the long vacation and begin a new phase of learning under the 2026/2027 academic programme.
Following the end of the first term, schools will close for the Christmas vacation. The holiday period will begin on Friday, December 18, 2026, and continue until Monday, January 4, 2027. This break will allow pupils, teachers and school staff to celebrate the festive season, spend time with their families and prepare for the second term.
The first term is traditionally one of the longest in Ghana’s school calendar and provides schools with sufficient time to cover a significant portion of the academic syllabus.
Second Term Starts in January 2027
After the Christmas and New Year holidays, pupils and teachers will return to school on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, for the beginning of the second term.
The second term has been scheduled to last for 12 weeks and will end on Thursday, March 25, 2027. During this period, schools are expected to continue classroom instruction, conduct assessments and prepare pupils for activities planned later in the academic year.
Once the term ends, schools will close for another vacation beginning on Friday, March 26, 2027. The break will continue until Monday, April 19, 2027, giving both learners and teachers an opportunity to rest before the final term begins.
The second term is particularly important because it allows schools to evaluate pupils’ academic progress and make any necessary adjustments before the final months of the academic year.
Third Term Will Conclude the Academic Year
The final term of the 2026/2027 academic year will begin on Tuesday, April 20, 2027.
According to the approved calendar, the third term will run for 14 weeks before ending on Thursday, July 22, 2027. This marks the official conclusion of the 2026/2027 academic year for all basic schools across Ghana.
Once schools close on July 22, pupils will begin their long vacation on Friday, July 23, 2027. The holiday provides learners with time to rest before the start of another academic year while teachers complete administrative duties and prepare for the next session.
The third term is also an important period because many schools organise end of year examinations, academic assessments and other activities that help determine pupils’ readiness to progress to the next class.
Mid-Term Breaks Included in Every School Term
To support the wellbeing of both teachers and pupils, the Ghana Education Service has maintained the practice of introducing short mid-term breaks during the academic year.
According to the circular, every school term will include a two-day mid-term break. These breaks are intended to give learners and teachers a short opportunity to rest before continuing with classroom activities.
For the first term, the mid-term break has been scheduled for Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, 2026.
The Ghana Education Service explained that these breaks help reduce fatigue, improve concentration and allow schools to resume academic work with renewed energy during the remainder of the term.
Although only the first term dates were specifically highlighted in the circular, similar two-day breaks will also be observed during the second and third terms.
BECE Examination Dates Officially Confirmed
One of the most important announcements contained in the new academic calendar is the confirmation of the dates for the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination.
According to the Ghana Education Service, candidates preparing to complete Junior High School will sit for the BECE from Wednesday, May 5, 2027, to Wednesday, May 12, 2027.
The confirmation of these dates gives pupils, teachers and parents enough time to organise revision programmes and prepare thoroughly for the national examination.
Schools are also expected to use the available time to complete the syllabus, organise mock examinations and provide additional academic support for candidates preparing for the examination.
For many pupils, the BECE is one of the most important examinations in their academic journey because the results determine admission into Senior High Schools and other second cycle institutions.
Public Holidays Must Still Be Observed
The Ghana Education Service also reminded schools that all officially recognised public holidays falling within the academic calendar must continue to be observed.
This means that although schools will follow the approved academic calendar, classes will not be held on national public holidays declared by the Government of Ghana.
School administrators are expected to adjust their internal schedules where necessary while ensuring that sufficient teaching time is maintained throughout the academic year.
The inclusion of public holidays within the planning process helps schools organise lessons more effectively and minimise disruptions to teaching and learning.
GES Directs Education Officials to Prepare for Implementation
In the official circular, the Ghana Education Service instructed education authorities at every level to familiarise themselves with the approved calendar and begin preparations for its implementation.
Regional Directors of Education have been directed to communicate the calendar to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education, who will in turn ensure that all heads of basic schools receive the necessary information.
School leaders are expected to use the calendar as a guide when planning academic programmes, examinations, staff meetings, parent engagements and other school activities throughout the year.
The GES believes that early planning and proper coordination will contribute to a smooth and successful academic year across the country.
Parents Encouraged to Plan Ahead
The release of the official academic calendar also provides valuable information for parents and guardians.
Knowing the exact opening and closing dates allows families to prepare school fees, uniforms, books, transportation and other educational expenses well in advance. Parents can also plan holidays, family events and other activities around the official school calendar to minimise disruptions to their children’s education.
For parents of BECE candidates, the confirmed examination dates provide enough time to support their children with revision schedules, learning materials and emotional encouragement as they prepare for one of the most important examinations in basic education.
